Waking up at anchor in a quiet bay
Set an alarm for sunrise and you get places like Koh Hong or Maya Bay almost empty, an hour or two before the first speedboats arrive. Mornings at anchor are the calmest part of the day: flat water, warm air, a kayak slid off the swim platform into a silent lagoon. Breakfast comes when you are ready, not when a tour schedule says so. Limestone walls catch the early light, hornbills move through the trees on the Phang Nga islands, and the loudest sound is the tender's rope against the hull. This is the single best reason to stay out overnight.
Reaching the Similans, Surin and further north
The Similan Islands sit around 60 nautical miles north-west of Phuket, too far for a comfortable day return but an easy overnight passage. Give it two or three days and you can anchor among the granite boulders and pale sand that make the Similans a favourite for snorkelling and diving. Push on and the Surin Islands add some of the healthiest shallow reef in the region, plus the Moken sea-gypsy villages. Both are national parks with a season: they generally open around mid-October and close in mid-May for the monsoon, so trips this far north are a dry-season plan. Closer to home, Phang Nga Bay, Phi Phi and Racha work all year.
Cabins and life aboard overnight
What sleeping aboard feels like depends on the boat. Our catamarans and motor yachts carry two to four ensuite cabins with proper double beds, air conditioning and fresh-water showers, so nobody is roughing it. Sailing yachts trade a little space for the feel of being under canvas. Crew numbers scale with the yacht: expect a captain, a cook or hostess and deckhands on the larger vessels, which means meals appear, decks stay clean and you never touch a line unless you want to. Days run on swimming, snorkelling, kayaks and paddleboards, long lunches and sundowners on the foredeck. Bring soft bags, reef-safe sunscreen and not much else.

Two-day Phang Nga and Krabi: leave Phuket mid-morning, anchor for the night among the karst islands near Koh Hong, explore the hongs and sea caves by kayak at dawn, then cross to Krabi's Railay and Chicken Island before turning home. Short passages, easy pace. Three-day Similan run: an early start north for two nights at anchor, days spent snorkelling the boulder bays and Donald Duck Bay, an optional detour to Koh Bon or Surin for divers, then the passage back. Planning, seasons and indicative cost
The prime window for multi-day trips runs from November to April, when the Andaman is at its calmest and the far national parks are open. May to October still suits shorter overnights around Phuket, Phang Nga and Phi Phi, with greener islands and fewer boats about. In peak season, book cabins and the better yachts a few weeks ahead. How many days do I need to reach the Similan Islands?
Plan on at least two days, and three is more comfortable. The Similans sit roughly 60 nautical miles north-west of Phuket, so you want a passage each way plus time at anchor in between. Two nights aboard lets you snorkel the main boulder bays without rushing. Divers heading on to Koh Bon or Surin should allow the full three days.
What is sleeping on a yacht actually like?
More hotel than camping on our overnight boats. Cabins are ensuite with double beds, air conditioning and fresh-water showers, and the yacht sits quietly at anchor overnight in a sheltered bay. You will hear water against the hull and little else. Lighter sleepers often prefer the larger motor yachts and catamarans, which feel the most stable at anchor.
When is the best time of year for a multi-day charter?
November to April is the prime season, with calm seas and the northern national parks open. The Similan and Surin parks generally close from mid-May to mid-October for the monsoon, so trips that far north are a dry-season plan. Shorter overnights around Phuket, Phang Nga and Phi Phi run happily all year, with greener scenery and fewer boats in the low season.
Do we need any sailing experience?
None at all. Every overnight charter is fully crewed, so a captain navigates, a cook or hostess handles meals and deckhands manage the lines and anchoring. Your only job is to choose the bays you want to see and how long to linger. If you fancy taking the helm or trimming a sail on the sailing yachts, the crew will gladly show you.
